Jack Leas is a project engineer here at Franjo Construction. He’s one of the most laid-back people we know and has a passion for construction. Let’s get to know Jack a little more:

What do you do?

I am a project engineer. My main responsibilities can be summarized as assisting the Project Manager and Superintendent on any given project. I handle Requests for Information (RFIs), the submittal process, Purchase Orders (POs), and coordination with our subcontractors.

What about before Franjo?

Before I joined Franjo, I worked at 84 Lumber in sales. Prior to that, I was in college at Kent State where I majored in Construction Management. While there, I worked for an environmental company and completed some internships in Construction Management.

What skills or traits have you always had that relate to your job?

Well, my dad is a carpenter, so I was always helping him to fix or build things. I got a lot of practice sweeping up sawdust! Dad has a woodshop in the basement and used to build custom cabinetry. He also built our house and has replaced the roof.

What is your goal in the construction industry?

Right now, I’m working toward becoming a Project Manager. There is so much you need to know.

Construction is a very complex but very fascinating field. I learn something new every day.

Do you have a favorite project?

Probably Munhall Borough Building. It’s the first project I’ve worked on from the very beginning, and it’s now almost complete. Having that level of involvement has been very rewarding. I can see the impact I made on that project. I was also involved with Beesontown Shoppes, but when I joined Franjo, it was already well underway.

What do you love most about Franjo?

The people. Everyone is friendly, and there is a real family atmosphere. From the day I walked in the door, I’ve been able to just strike up a conversation with anyone. I love that we jump right in and get to work rather than that awkward phase of being the new guy. We all love to joke around with each other too, which makes it fun.

What is your favorite thing about what you do and why?

I love being able to see what I do.

Each time I visit an active job site, the project looks different because it’s moving along, and I know I’m part of that.

Every day is different. Never a dull day!

Least favorite thing about this job?

I don’t like to sit. I’m an active person, so I like to get up and move around a lot. That’s why I love going to our sites so much.

What is one thing you’re known for?

I’ve always been told I’m very laid back. I’ve always been this way. People like to joke that I will never have any wrinkles or grey hair.

What are your hobbies?

Golf! I’m addicted. I’m way better now than I was 2 years ago. I also enjoy fishing and hunting.

Tell us about your home life.

I’m the youngest of 3 children. I have a brother and sister, and we’re all 2 years apart from each other. My sister lives in Erie, and my brother is here in Pittsburgh.

Do you have any places on your vacation bucket list?

I’ve always wanted to go to Egypt to see the pyramids. Having a lifelong interest in construction, I’m fascinated with the pyramids – how they were built and especially how long ago that was having been without equipment such as cranes, etc.

What do you know when you’re not at work or golfing?

I listen to comedians. My favorites are Bill Burr and Dave Chapelle. I also have my favorite TV shows: Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Breaking Bad, LOST.
